To begin Week Three I decided to take a break from learning specific songs and start off with a couple of lessons. I wasn't getting the palm muting technique down in the Slayer song I'd been learning so I completed a few lessons including the Palm Mute lesson, which was sweet. Playing the track with the palm mutes, even imperfectly, sounded so metal – m/ – it was awesome.
Going forward I plan to divide my time 50/50 between lessons and learning songs. Rocksmith 2014 does a good job of feeding you small lessons appropriate to the song that you're on, which is great because you can take a break and do a lesson – Slides, Palm Mutes, useful chords for example – while still in song mode.
No matter what I do though I seem to be completely stuck at 39.5% overall completion on the Slayer song so I decided to try another song. I figured maybe it would be easier with a song I don't know as sometimes the breakdown simplification for the game can seem a bit alien from the song as you remember it in your head and takes a bit of getting used to. I went for "Cold Company" by Minus The Bear. Not a band I'm really into – I'm not a fan of that emo-ish indie sound in general – but I got 31% off the bat and I'm mildly embarrassed by how much I enjoyed playing it.
Towards the end of the week I went back to "War Ensemble" by Slayer but towards the end of the hour's practice on Christmas Eve I broke the high E string again! I managed to play some R.E.M. and Bob Dylan without needing the missing string too much (sorry, Bob) but when I turned the Xbox back on the next day Rocksmith required me to retune so I couldn't play and of course being Christmas Day there was nowhere I could buy a new string. Trust Slayer to try to ruin Christmas! Next week I'm sticking with Minus The Bear.
