Whether battling Ticketmaster fees or curating a new-look setlist, the Cure haven't shied away from bending the status quo during their current North American tour. At the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Tuesday (May 23), the band gave concertgoers a first look at unreleased track "Another Happy Birthday."
Robert Smith first mentioned the track to MTV in 1997, saying it was "unlike anything the Cure have done before," before attributing its uniqueness to the fluidity of the arrangement. "It's not a verse-chorus-verse type of song."
So far, Smith and co. have performed songs that they haven't played live in nearly forty years ("A Thousand Hours" and "Six Different Ways") and included several unreleased songs in their setlist on top of "Another Happy Birthday" ("Alone," "Endsong," "A Fragile Thing," "And Nothing Is Forever" and "I Can Never Say Goodbye").
The Cure will continue their tour with pit stops next month in Vancouver (June 2), Toronto (June 14) and Montreal (June 16 and 17).
