Wally Brill

The Covenant

BY David LewisPublished Dec 1, 1999

Hebraic club grooves anyone? Wally Brill creates miraculous music in his merger of contemporary dance rhythms and the ancient sounds of the cantor. While Eno and Byrne paved the way with their innovative experiments in My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Brill creates music that can sound truly apocalyptic. He mixes biblical chants into diverse settings that utilise inspired combinations of bouzouki, charango, choir, didgeridoo, guitar feedback, loops, organ, percussion, piano, spoken word, synthesiser, tablas, trumpet and violin. Bill Laswell’s sonic experiments sound tame and two dimensional in comparison. If you are still looking for a perfect millennial dance groove for New Year’s Eve then check this baby out.
