Viking Club

Viking Club

BY Sam SutherlandPublished Jul 1, 2004

Atonal yelping over driving instruments bashing out bizarre time signatures. Group screams, trashing drums, locked-in bass, unusual guitar parts, and a clear fondness for Blood Brothers and Red Light Sting. These elements form a small part of what defines the Viking Club (formerly the Explanation), whose unique style has a tendency to either alienate or consume those who witness their intense live show. On this two-song disc, the band blast through "Our Friends/Our Enemies” and the incredible "Everyone’s A Photographer,” whose opening cry of "This is not a mistake” can be viewed as the perfect mantra for a band whose bizarre musical approach leaves listeners with a love-it-or-hate it choice. For those who chose to love it, this disc is yours to appreciate for the wonderfully original work that it is.
