Terrors Of The Town

BY Craig DanielsPublished Sep 1, 2002

Terrors of the Town is a compilation featuring ten hard rocking street punk, rock'n'roll and metal bands from Toronto. All the usual Bovine Sex Club and ex-El Mocambo suspects are here, including CJ Sleez, with her Plasmatics/ L7-style growl, as well the undisputed kings of the scene the Sinisters, with two songs taken from their heavy Jumbo Means Jumbo album. Relative new kids on the block Cheerleader chime in with two slabs of Detroit via Scandinavia-style straight-ahead rock. Tchort provides the only real metal moments on the disc with their melodic '70s retro attack, complete with great dual guitar solos, gong hits and noodly fills. For all the punkers out there, there are the Falls River Fiends, the Vapids and, on the heavier tip, the crushing street anthems of Elvis Manson. Without a doubt the best stuff here is the experienced and confident power rock of Citizen Kill, who have that effortless riff-rock juice mixed with the only trace of humour present on the whole record with their number "Gimmee Pills." Rounding out the roster are Nice Cat and Shaftdrive, both on the female stoner rock tuned-down guitar tip. All in all, this is a solid little representation of one of Toronto's many micro-scenes.
