InsideOut: A Psyche And It Geography

BY Glen HallPublished Mar 16, 2009

The British-based Sonic Arts Network is justifiably renowned for its curated CDs that explore some of the most creative areas of experimental music making. InsideOut is a striking addition to SAN's series, with its focus on the hard-to-pin-down "inscape" of human experience. Curator Andrew Kötting's selection of pieces form a breathtaking panorama of inner-centred music. From the electro acoustics of Ansuman Biswas's "Klytaimnestra Washing Herself" to the lo-fi, folksy "Tarred and Feathered Heart" by Jem Finer and Jermey Banx, and the interior "lecture" made audible, "Tomorrow Muffle" by Sukhdev Sandhu and Scanner, each piece seems like a non sequitur to the previous one, until its innerness begins to reveal itself, forming an almost palpable gestalt of the psyche. To aid in that unveiling, former lumberjack and street trader turned painter/decorator Kötting has written an extensive, insightful, articulate booklet replete with intriguing sketches and photos. This is document that rewards revisiting.
