Dead Band's Party: A Tribute to Oingo Boingo

BY Liz WorthPublished Aug 1, 2005

Dead Band’s Party is an absolutely brilliant collaboration between 14 bands to pay homage to a band probably best known for their contribution to the ’80s with the film Weird Science and its title track. Since the days of Oingo Boingo’s quirky pop songs, front-man Danny Elfman has continually influenced pop culture by forging a successful career in writing musical scores for film and television. Elfman has worked on The Simpsons, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Edward Scissorhands, to name a few. Kicking things off on this tribute is Clear Static’s straight out of the ’80s version of "Dead Man’s Party,” which delivers a perfectly solid, new wave sound. The Matches (with Zebrahead) lend a sound as erratic as Oingo Boingo’s with their take on "Violent Love,” and Reel Big Fish’s cover of "We Close Our Eyes” blends warm ska tones to a retro mix. Finch end it all fittingly with "When the Lights Go Out.” The artists featured on Dead Band’s Party bring perfectly diverse styles together to create an appropriate tribute to an eccentric band.
