Vagabon has announced a new album Sorry I Haven't Called, out September 15 via Nonesuch Records.
Sorry I Haven't Called is the follow-up to Vagabon's 2019 self-titled album. It was born out of a place of mourning after the sudden death of her best friend in 2021. To process the tragic event, she decided to move to a small lakeside village in Germany where her phone didn't work, and there were no shops close by. In her isolation, she wrote and recorded most of the album, consisting of a surprisingly playful collection of songs.
"A lot of the music that I was making there had nothing to do with my grief at all," said the Cameroonian-American multi-instrumentalist born Lætitia Tamko in a press release. "Once I gave myself permission to make a record that's full of life and energy, I realized that's the point of this album. In the midst of going through all of these tough things, it became a record because of the vitality that these songs had."
"This whole record is how I talk to my friends and how to talk to my lovers," she added. "I think honesty and conversational songwriting can become poetry. There's beauty in plainly speaking without metaphors and without flowery imagery."
Sorry I Haven't Called channels Tamko's love of dance music and rave culture, which she revisited while in Germany. "The only things that were giving me access to a feeling were dance music and going to a rave in an extremely dark club where if I wanted to cry, I could do it and be around other people," she said.
Vagabon has also mapped out a fall tour with stops in Toronto on October 22 and Vancouver on December 9. Check out the full schedule below, where you can also listen to "Can I Talk My Shit?" and see the full tracklist for Sorry I Haven't Called.
