You've heard of music for babies, but what about music by babies? Psychic Ills bassist Elizabeth Hart and Lee "Scratch" Perry collaborator Iván Diaz Mathé have answered that call by recording new music from the womb while Hart was pregnant with their child Luca Yupanqui.
Today, they've shared a new single by Luca, which is set to be a part of a larger body of "pre-natal essence"-capturing work titled Sounds of the Unborn. The album is due to be released through Sacred Bones on April 2.
Using "biosonic MIDI technology, which translated Luca's in utero movements into sound," the baby's parents have "designed a ritual, a kind of joint meditation for the three of them, with the MIDI devices hooked to Elizabeth's stomach, transcribing its vibrations into Iván's synthesizers."
The process is outlined further in the following statement:
They let the free-form meditations flow without much interference, just falling deeper into trance and feeling the unity. After five hour-long sessions, the shape of an album began to emerge. Elizabeth and Iván then edited and mixed the results of the sessions, respecting the sounds as they were produced, trying to intervene as little as possible, allowing Luca's message to exist in its raw form.
For now, baby Luca has shared her forthcoming record's new single "V4.3 pt. 2," as well as the song's accompanying music video by Victoria Keddie with assistance from Hart and Mathé.
Watch that below, where you can also find the album's tracklisting.
And in case you were wondering: yes, Luca has since been born.
