The self-titled debut album from Two Fingers (Amon Tobin and Joe "Doubleclick" Chapman) released earlier this year wasn't my cup of tea. Although it received critical acclaim from respected journalists, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the vocals, which were the main focus of the project. Thankfully, Paper Bag Records decided to release a very limited 22 track follow-up album with ten new tracks from the duo, appropriately titled Instrumentals. The new album shows a mastery of Tobin and Chapman's ability to make the simplest drum beats stick in your mind with organic rhythmic structures and subtle hints of melodic grooves from around the globe. Bass junkies will be overjoyed by the infectious beats of "Bad Girl," "Broken" and "Moth Rhythm." Instrumentals is a must-have for anyone who's a fan of Tobin's earlier work, or any DJs looking to make people sweat on the dance floor.
