The Illegal Bootleg Demos

BY Rob NayPublished May 1, 2002

Trole play an eclectic brand of blues-based rock’n’roll. The Illegal Bootleg Demos commences with a rather grating song, "Just a Girl,” that features sustained, exasperating lyrics and an un-melodious guitar riff. In many cases, the band’s diversity often makes for puzzling, unbalanced listening, especially on strange bayou-inspired songs such as "Poor Man’s River” and "Nosey Neighbours.” The mid-tempo "Murdered” resembles the soundtrack to many ’80s after school specials, mild and indistinct. The group does best when they stick to acoustic pop songs and refrain from straying into varied areas. Trole are skilful musicians capable of performing numerous musical styles, their songwriting, however, would benefit significantly from an increased focus and unity.
