The ongoing now-gen revival of side-scrolling platformers continues with this Scandinavian sequel to Finnish studio Frozenyte's 2009 indie download hit. Once again, you make your way through a gorgeously drawn faerie land, battling goblins, witches and monsters while solving a series of physics-based puzzles to cross the level and save the kingdom.

The game stars three heroes ― overweight knight Pontius, sly thief Zoya and fusty wizard Amadeus, each with their own puzzle-vital skillset ― who can be alternated between solo players or played simultaneously in local or, now, online co-op. The small-scale story is set a little after the original, with a new crisis drawing our protagonists back together and across the screen.

It's a real looker, besting its impressive predecessor and providing a good enough reason for fans to return and new folks to jump in. It's clever too, which is another good reason for those who revel in level design and puzzle cracking. But unlike many breakthrough indie downloads, it's not a revolutionary effort by any means.

Trine 2 is a game that has tradition oozing from every pixel. Think of it more as tasty comfort food for gamers who grew up on Nintendo side-scrollers and a pretty peek into the past for everyone else.
