My Bloody Japancakes

BY Cam LindsayPublished Nov 26, 2007

Considering the My Bloody Valentine reunion tour is already sold out, Athens, GA’s dreamy instrumental crew Japancakes picked a perfect time to cover seminal Loveless. Skirting cries of gimmickry by turning in an immaculately composed adaptation, all seven members interpret their own parts separately, making it as much an experiment as it was for Kevin Shields in 1991, though without the heaving, mesmeric noise. Each instrument rewrites how we know this work, converging individual expressions that result in a pedal steel and cello carrying the melodies of MBV’s vocals. On top of that, they continue this shoegazing-lite exercise on their other new album, Giving Machines, paying homage to Cocteau Twins’ "Heaven Or Las Vegas.”
