The Tough Alliance

"Neo Violence"

From now until January 13, I'll be featuring my favourite tracks of 2008, some of which have already appeared in Click Hear throughout the year, some of which haven't.

It actually kind of rhymes: the Tough Alliance and "Neo Violence." Though they didn't release any brand new albums in 2008, Sweden's brilliant blonde-haired, baseball bat-swinging troublemakers the Tough Alliance did manage to squeeze out this whip-smart single via their Sincerely Yours label.

Taken from their 2007 LP, A New Chance, which was finally issued here in North America this year courtesy of Modular, "Neo Violence" is a wickedly biting bit of satire, or possibly sociological commentary (you never can tell with Henning and Eric), wrapped in lush Balearic beats and namedropping. A tad subtle for these neat lads but it reeks of the same malevolence wrought by their soul-mates in Funny Games.

The video is a neon-laser-lit event filled with sensitive acting, grandiose Greek columns, midnight-black club space and its own battle between virginal light and overwhelmingly dark motifs. And of course, there are the obligatory baseball bats. The drama, of course, is fitting.
