Toronto-based synthpop artist TOVI (real name Rebecca Emms) has announced her debut album I Keep Floating Away, due out June 17. TOVI has also released new single "I Don't Think We Can Be Friends," alongside a self-directed music video.

Emms said of the album in a release:

The album was recorded in the middle of winter in a Toronto lockdown. I went as far with the track as I could in my home studio (including recording vocals) and Josh filled in the missing pieces; whether it be live drums, modular synth, or new ideas for song structure - we really played to each other's strengths perfectly. The record includes songs I wrote pre-COVID as well as during dead-of-winter/lockdown-times, so I feel like I'm moving through a lot of different emotions across the album.

I Keep Floating Away was produced by Josh Korody (Breeze, Nailbiter) with mastering by Jesse F Keeler (Death From Above 1979, MSTRKRFT).

In regards to the new single, Emms said the song is a "mini anthem about learning to let go of people who cause you heartache or just made you feel bad. Sonically, I think the track channels some of the albums I loved in my teens — like Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Fever to Tell — just pure fun."

Speaking about the video, Emms added: "This song, the colour of each instrument really comes across to me with so much personality. My aim with the video was to basically put a 'face' to the sound — the movement and colour of these sonic personalities."
