Toronto's Lyon Signs with Black Box for 'Indian Summer' EP

Toronto songwriter Lauren Malyon previously released music under her own name, but now she's reinvented herself as Lyon and has announced her debut EP under the new moniker. Indian Summer will be out on August 20 through Black Box Recordings.

Malyon's synth-pop-oriented Lyon project traces back to 2012, when she teamed up with producer Japeth Maw. Malyon was apparently dealing with some personal heartache at the time and, according to a press release, she channeled her feelings with lengthy sessions of talking and daytime television before quick writing sessions.

The pair set out to write five songs. They recorded the results with Jesse Smith last fall. "Writing the Indian Summer EP was the hardest, yet most therapeutic thing I've ever done, " Malyon said in a statement. "In a moment of utter vulnerability, I felt a profound creative energy that fuelled the writing process for Indian Summer. In collaboration with my co-writer Japeth, we aspired to explore a snapshot in time with the intent to create something raw and beautiful."

Below, listen to the synth-driven title track, which blossoms from dark minimalism into a lush, twinkling chorus. The single will officially arrive on July 23; for now, you can watch a trailer for the video, below.
