Toronto troubadours (and dear friends) Ian Daniel Kehoe and Luka Kuplowsky have joined forces as Ingredient, announcing their debut collaborative album and sharing its lead single "Photo."
The self-titled record arrives November 25 via Telephone Explosion. It follows Kuplowsky's 2020 solo effort Stardust and the prolific Kehoe's most recent venture, this summer's Yes Very So. Ingredient was assembled, disassembled and reassembled over the course of six months in a home studio the duo frequented daily, resulting in eight songs from inside a shared philosophical and musical universe.
Kehoe reached out to Kuplowsky, straining under the weight of the summer of 2020. Exploring the sounds they were both drawn to (ambient pop, house, dub), the duo anchored their potent creative potential in the well of their deep friendship to forge enigmatic, electronic avant-pop.
Reading more like poetry than lyrics, the words across Ingredient reflect "the persistence of change, the infinite variability of nature where randomness and divergence are no accidents," according to press notes. The collaboration proved to be a necessary reorientation for Kehoe's self-preservation, embracing the openness of shared creative practice as a model for navigating the complexity of his "psychological shattering" amid the pandemic.
First single "Photo" is a spiritual and philosophical treatise wrapped in the ribbons of exultant dance music, merging the knee-jerk visceral reaction of house and dub's mystical effects. "What do we mean when we talk about happiness?" Ingredient questions, losing their bodies to dance — but never faltering in their micro-macro intellectual fascination with the nature of things.
