Nervous Nitelife: Tom Stephan

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Feb 1, 2010

As described by Nervous Records Founder Michael Weiss: "The goal of the Nervous Nitelife series is to faithfully represent the big room, late nite club culture of America." From the dance floor catcalls by Rooster & Peralta on Robbie Rivera's "Move Move" to the energetic callout not to sit down on Tom Stephan's "Turn That Shit Up," there's no concealing the motivation to get people revved up for the dance floor. And the dreamy finesse of these beats, with similar soul and eccentricity to Cedric Gervais and some allusions to the booming creativity of Boys Noize, gives a great blank slate for dance moves. With these creative, hard-hitting beats, it's about a seamless flow and chemistry between the tracks, and Tom Stephan makes a positive attempt at this. This is intuitive music, sometimes simple and repetitive, for club people who like to forget the world, and people, for a while.
