Who are you?
Toby Marks of Banco de Gaia
What are you up to?
DJ tour of North America to promote new CD, "Igizeh"
Hometown and current HQ:
Born in London, now living in Draycott, a small village in SW England, near Bristol.
Current fixations:
"League of Gentlemen" (UK sitcom), Radiohead (still!), new Fatboy Slim, Harry Potter, Indian food (still!)
Mind altering work of art:
"Silent Running" (1970s sci-fi movie with Bruce Dern trying to save the last few trees and plants from a burned out Earth. Makes me cry at the thought every time.)
Most memorable/inspirational gig and why?
Banco in Austin Texas, 1995. A small club totally crammed, the audience and artist alike lost all inhibitions and celebrated joyously. And sweated lots.
What should everyone shut up about?
The presidential so-called election.
Your greatest strength/weakness:
Very sensitive/too sensitive.
Your vital daily ritual:
Flossing.
Guilty pleasures:
Computer games, alcoholic excess.
If I wasn't playing music I would be
A scuba diving instructor or a ski bum.
Your most memorable day job:
This is about the only one I've ever had!
Best/worst advice received:
Now is the happiest time of your life/plan for your retirement
I would drop everything to play a benefit for
Tibet, Friends of the Earth, Amnesty International
What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
Meg Ryan movies...
What personal trait would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed? And have you?
Addictive drug dependency (yes I did, I can't work with that). I would probably never end up in bed with someone without knowing all their big flaws first.
When I think of Canada I think:
Clean air, skiing, my friends in BC and Bryan Adams (sorry)
Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
Not really, just you can play an album over and over for days without getting sore. Well, over and over for days at all, really.
Strangest brush with celebrity:
Talking to the lead singer of The Levellers at a Banco gig in 1993 when they were really huge and not knowing who he was asking "so, do play anything?"
What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
Having children, but you can't have it all in one life.
