TLC Biopic in the Works

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Dec 1, 2011

There are already a handful of upcoming biopics we're excited about, from the Dennis Wilson flick to that pair of Jeff Buckley-inspired films, but news of a movie based on '90s R&B trio TLC is welcomed all the same.

The Hollywood Reporter explains that VH1 is behind the project, and the TLC biopic will be the first of a proposed series of made-for-TV movies focusing on artists of yore. Already familiar with summing up an artist's life, What's Love Got to Do with It writer Kate Lanier will pen the true tale of Chilli, Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes .

There's tons of material to mine, from early triumphs, like their smash 1991 debut Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip and its multi-million-selling follow-up CrazySexyCool, to a number of spicy incidents, from the band's bankruptcy claims, to Lopes's fiery relationship with football player Andre Rison, and her tragic death in 2002. They could also touch on the group's reality show R U the Girl.

"We're honored to collaborate with Chilli, Tionne and [executive producer] Bill Diggins in sharing their own personal story and TLC's record-breaking legacy with VH1 viewers," said Jeff Olde, the executive vice-president of original programming and production at VH1.

Interestingly, news of the biopic comes the same week that Watkins was forced to file for bankruptcy again. The singer claims that her financial woes are due to unpaid child support from ex-husband Mack 10. Here's hoping the film helps her out a bit.

An airing date for the as-yet-untitled TLC film has yet to be delivered.
