Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke's former partner and mother to his children, Dr. Rachel Owen, passed away on Sunday (December 18) at the age of 48 from cancer.

A lecturer at University of Oxford's Pembroke College, Owen specialized in medieval Italian literature, receiving a PhD for her studies of the illustrations in early manuscripts of Dante's Divine Comedy. She was also an artist and printmaker, recently presenting an exhibit of prints based on Dante's work.

An obituary published by Pembroke College notes that Owen continued to teach up until the most recent school term.

Yorke and Owen met while they were studying art at Exeter University, and were together for 23 years before splitting in August 2015. Despite the incredibly private nature of their time together, it is believed that the end of the relationship heavily influenced Radiohead's latest record, this year's A Moon Shaped Pool.

Owen is survived by her and Yorke's two children, 15-year-old Noah and 12-year-old Agnes.
