The Cure have announced they will be treating their 1990 remix album Mixed Up to a massive expanded reissue, ballooning the package to a sprawling vinyl set made up of four LPs. Of course, if you just stood in line for hours to grab the Record Store Day "exclusive" of Mixed Up as a picture disc, this news will be bittersweet.
Unlike the RSD versions of Mixed Up and companion album Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras 2018 that just came out on Saturday (April 21), the new vinyl editions will come on standard black wax. This means, that they will actually sound good (at least in theory) instead of just look pretty. After all, they were remastered by Cure frontman Robert Smith himself.
Of course, the Cure pulled the exact same move on RSD buyers last year with the reissue of their Greatest Hits collection. Again, they first reissued it as a 2-LP picture disc only to then reissue it again on standard black vinyl soon after Record Store Day 2017.
Whether you agree with these arguably shady release tactics or not, the newly mixed up versions of Mixed Up will arrive via Rhino Records on June 15. On that day, the album will come as a 3-CD "deluxe edition," as well as a 2-LP black vinyl set featuring the standard Mixed Up and another 2-LP package titled Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras.
For the deluxe CD version, disc one holds the standard Mixed Up album remastered by Smith, while disc two contains newly remastered remixes not included on the original album and captured between 1982 and 1990.
The third disc then features Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras, which again presents a pile of remixes not included on the original album.
"I wanted a three-disc package, but we didn't have enough 'historic' remixes — for a while I thought the 'extra-extras' CD would be Cure songs remixed by choice artists, rather than by choice remixers…" Smith said of the deluxe edition in a statement. "That then got me thinking maybe I should have a go at one… so in early August 2017, I decided to experiment with 'Three Imaginary Boys'. It is a pretty sparse multi-track; I pulled it apart at home and finished the initial remix in one session — and I really enjoyed the whole process."
