Sail On Sailor — 1972, a new box set from the Beach Boys, is due in December, featuring music from 1972's Carl and the Passions — "So Tough" and 1973's Holland. Today, they're previewing the effort with one of a whopping 80 previously unreleased tracks: "Carry Me Home," written and sung by the late Dennis Wilson.
Despite never having had an official release before, the song — about a soldier dying during the Vietnam War — was recorded during the Holland sessions and has long been a bootlegged fan favourite. On it, Wilson shares vocals with Blondie Chaplin over mournful piano and pedal steel.
"It's eerie listening back to this song after all these years," Chaplin told Rolling Stone. "It's how Dennis felt at the time. I see him struggling with his own worries. The voice is really sensitive, and you can feel the emotional pain. War on the battlefield and inside, it's always very combustible inside. He was the real surfer, rowdy and sweet."
