Terra Lightfoot has announced plans for a new record, Healing Power — the follow-up to 2020's Consider the Speed, arriving October 13 via Sonic Unyon Records — in tandem with a North American tour that will bring her to a whopping 18 Canadian cities this fall.
Teaming up for the third time with producer Gus van Go for Healing Power, Lightfoot is also joined by bassist Elijah Abrams and Blue Rodeo's Glenn Milchem on drums for the record. Its 12 pop-rock tracks are said to represent Lightfoot at "a career high."
"There was a sense of freedom, both personally and creatively, that struck me while I was writing this record," Lightfoot said a release. "Once I got back into the studio with Gus, having already made two records with him, there was an undeniable comfort and workflow that we just fell into."
She added, "We are super-productive together in the studio. I also seem to get my best vocal takes with Gus behind the board. We built this record pretty quickly together with the band on call whenever we needed them."
Today, Lightfoot shares the album's lead single "Cross Border Lovers," which arrives alongside a music video co-directed by Lyle Bell and Lightfoot herself.
Of the track's title, she explained in a statement:
This is a song for all the lovers during the pandemic that might not have been able to be together. I played a show in Calgary where two separate couples came up to the merch table, one after another, and shared stories of being separated in different countries for months while pandemic restrictions were strict. Both couples used to listen to a specific song of mine to feel connected to each other. Of course, I was touched. And because they came up one after the other, their situations really struck me. I wrote the words "cross border lovers" on the back of my merch settlement sheet that night. At a friend's cottage a month later, I sat down to write, looked at those words, and the song and melody fell out so quickly I could barely write it.
Lightfoot will take "Cross Border Lovers" and the rest of the album on tour in September. The trek begins in Western Canada, starting off in Calgary and winding its way through Edmonton, Winnipeg and Saskatoon before a doubleheader in Vancouver, where she'll open for 54•40. Lightfoot will perform two shows for Festival of Small Halls — once in Prescott, ON, and again in Seeley's Bay, ON — before heading stateside for a run of seven shows supporting Ariel Posen.
When she returns to Canada, she'll play another 10 shows across Ontario, including stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Hamilton, Windsor, London and more, as well as a lone performance in Quebec at Montreal's Casa Del Popolo toward the end of the run.
