In what's one of the most hilariously contrary album titles in recent memory, punked-up indie lifers Superchunk have called their latest collection I Hate Music — an album Merge Records has revealed it will release on August 20.
According to a press release, this album is the "dark twin" of Superchunk's 2010 disc Majesty Shredding. It's said to be aggressive and energetic while also possessing a shadowy undercurrent.
The announcement reads, "I Hate Music is an album about love more than anything else: love of life, love of living, love of people, and yeah, love of music. It defies its own title so completely and diligently that it never even seems like a fair fight: There's no pain this deep or yearning this severe without the type of love earned over a lifetime."
Hear a few snippets of music in a short teaser video, which is embedded at the bottom of this page.
The album is available to pre-order on CD, LP, or deluxe LP. This deluxe version is pressed on coloured vinyl and comes with a bonus 7-inch featuring two non-LP tracks. Pre-orders will come with a poster, the first 200 of which are signed.
See the band's tour schedule below the tracklist. The main leg of the trip is solely in the U.S., although there's appearance at Calgary's Sled Island coming up in June.
