The Exclaim! Questionnaire

BY None NonePublished Nov 17, 2016

Strictly Kev is one half of the current DJ Food line-up. DJ Food's new album, Now, Listen!, is part of the Solid Steel remix series on Ninja Tune. He hails from London, UK.

Current fixations:

Ebay, the film Amelie, Product Placement CD, designing the new Herbaliser LP artwork, getting some record shelving built to house my collection properly, buying vinyl (that old chestnut) trying not to eat poorly and get ill on tour, spending time with my wife.

Mind-altering work of art:

www.presstube.com: awesome flash art by Canadian team.

Most memorable or inspirational gig and why?

The recent XEN Solid Steel night at Cargo in London (the monthly Ninja night). We performed with Coldcut and it was one of the best London gigs I've ever done, amazing response. The Shadow, Cut Chemist, Z-trip Product Placement tour was inspirational too.

What has been your career high and low?

Playing the London Beastie Boys show with Money Mark, Kid Koala, ISP, Scratch Perverts, X-ecutioners, Alec Empire in ‘97. Hopefully more highs are yet to come. On the low side I've been fortunate, so far.

What should everyone shut up about?

Geri Halliwell.

I would drop everything to play a benefit for:

My mum.

What trait do you like and dislike most about yourself?

Like: I'm a nice enough guy.

Dislike: Sometimes I'm not so nice.

What would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed, and have you?

Rudeness, smelliness, non-co-operation, lateness (applies to both).

When I think of Canada I think:

Montreal, Kid Koala, Jeff Waye, Phillipa Klein and the North American office, cheap vinyl, mmmmm...

What is your vital daily ritual?

Turning the computer on.

How do you spoil yourself?

I buy records. All the time.

What was your most memorable day job?

Cleaning the roof and balcony of the Queen Mother's house (true).

If I wasn't playing music I would be:

Designing record covers.

What is your greatest fear?

My house burning down.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Rare vinyl divining rod in the tip of my nose.

What makes you want to take it off and get it on?

My wife.

Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?

One sounds better than the other, one fucks your body, the other fucks your mind.

Strangest brush with celebrity:

Bono from U2, he phoned me up on the way to Dublin airport after I played at his club in Ireland thanking me for a good night!

Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what would you serve them?

Funki Porcini, he's a very entertaining man. Pasta would be a safe bet as he lived in Italy for ten years.

What does your mom wish you were doing instead?

She doesn't understand what I'm doing now, she's just happy I'm making a living.
