Martin Stimming is a master of organic dance music. On his third full-length, the Hamburg-based producer pulls away from the more experimental sounds of sophomore album Liquorice, reaching closer to the instrument-laden grooves of his highly respected debut, Reflections. The result is a record that combines both of the best qualities of his previous releases, dabbling in some extremely groovy and emotional beats ("Die Taube auf dem Dach," "From One Cell"), and other more left-of-centre grooves ("Die Mächtigen"). Stimming's lack of quantization gives his work a more human quality than most electronic music, an attribute that helps him define rhythms our bodies respond to directly through an internal synchronization to his organization of sounds that expand from the inside outwards. Whether it's Stimming's distinctive vocoder use, emotive string sampling, field recordings or lush percussion and detailed accenting, listeners who favour both electronic and non-electronic types of music will find plenty of material on Stimming to satisfy both the body and mind. Stimming is one of those special artists able to traverse the negative connotations associated with certain genres, luring in new fans that might otherwise never have dipped their toes into uncomfortable waters.
