If you've heard Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks' recent single, "Senator," then you already know that it's an upbeat, catchy tune. It's unlikely get receive any radio play in its current form, however, since it prominently features the lyric "I know what the senator wants / What the senator wants is a blowjob." Well, Malkmus and Matador Records have come up with a creative way of solving the problem.
The label is holding a contest to come up with a word to replace "blowjob" that Malkmus can sing for a clean version of the tune. To enter, just go over to WhatDoesTheSenatorWant.com and type in your email address plus your radio-friendly lyric suggestion. Whatever word or words you chose, it must be under 25 characters.
The best part about the site is that you can view previous suggestions. Some of our favourites: "Some noggin," "scrotum," hodge podgy," "dome swab," "hotdog mouthwash." Then again, some of those might not be any more CRTC-approved than "blowjob."
If you win, you will have the honour of Malkmus singing your lyric. You'll also receive a one-of-a-kind seven-inch with your version of "Senator" on the A-side, plus the original on the flip. With just one copy, this may become the rarest Matador release ever.
The deadline is August 23, the same day that Malkmus's new album Mirror Traffic is released. The winner will be announced on September 15.
Of course, Mirror Traffic was produced by Beck. Be sure to check out Malkmus and co.'s upcoming tour schedule here.
