Starkey

Space Traitor Vol. 2

BY Ashley HampsonPublished Jun 6, 2011

The second release in the Space Traitor saga, Philly producer Starkey is back with Space Traitor Vol. 2. The EP boasts six original post-dubstep tracks that carry out the next chapter in the evolution of dubstep, along with six original remixes that cross into multiple genres, like Om Unit's tribal percussion-filled remix of "Lost In Space." "Street Rockers" sounds like a near collaboration with Harmonic 313's Mark Pritchard, the simple 8-bit glitches collapsing into relentless warbling bass before flowing back into simplicity. "Interlude" is a brilliant way to close the EP, in keeping with the Space Traitor vein, before introducing the remixes, weaving a robotic space tale of black holes and universal collapse that complements the album and future Space Traitor endeavours. The one track that seems misplaced amongst the flighty, ethereal vocals interspersed throughout is "Bricks," featuring Curly Castro. The Philadelphia rapper merely fills a lull on the EP, as the track circles a simple beat loop, only to slightly stray off path for a micro-interlude.
