Spoon solved their R.I.P. mystery for us a day ahead of time, revealing today (June 9) during a concert performance for NPR that the acronym is for the band's They Want My Soul opener "Rent I Pay."
Following an on-air interview with NPR's Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton, the band took the stage of New York's Le Poisson Rouge venue and started off the set with the new number. As you'll see down below around the 57-minute mark, the song features Spoon flirting with Stones-styled blues motifs while Britt Daniel sermonizes the crowd with his familiar, smoky cry about lost sleep, brotherly advice and more.
The studio version of "Rent I Pay" is due to be unveiled tomorrow, while They Want My Soul arrives in full August 5 via Loma Vista.
