Soviettes

LP III

BY Liz WorthPublished Aug 1, 2005

This third release from Minneapolis, Minnesota’s the Soviettes, appropriately entitled LP III to keep up the theme of past album titles LP I and LP II, starts off at full throttle with the assault of "Multiply and Divide.” Despite having two albums behind them, this quartet are still having to clear up the same myths that have been around from the start. One is that, despite any associations their name might bring to mind, they affiliate themselves more with partying than they do any actual communist party. The second is that the Soviettes are not an all-girl band, only fronted by girls, and are made up of Annie (guitar/vocals), Sturgeon (guitar/vocals), Suzy (bass/vocals), and Danny (drums/vocals). Since their incarnation in early 2000, the Soviettes have won over fans with the way they lovingly ease in and out of sugary bubblegum punk and full-on adrenaline thrashes, and this new album has more of the Soviettes doing just what everyone loves them for. The chewy opening track slides into melt-in-your-mouth heaven with "What Did I Do?!” and "Roller Girls.” Often hailed as a band who can appease fans from diverging tastes, the Soviettes have yet again come up with a record that will only boost their reputation even more.
