The British synth-pop duo of Marc Almond and Dave Ball, better known as Soft Cell, have confirmed plans to return with their first new studio album since 2002.
The group first teased the new material in a Facebook post, showing a small but mighty collection of Soft Cell tapes. They wrote: "Might be something to add to this superb collection of cassettes soon..."
The new material, which has yet to receive a tracklisting or release date, will mark their first studio album since Cruelty Without Beauty and their first recording since the release of their 2018 single "Northern Lights." It will also follow the pair's supposedly final gig at London's O2 Arena that same year.
Soft Cell confirmed plans for a new record, with Ball telling the Daily Star, "We haven't tried to write another 'Tainted Love.' Maybe we should!"
He added: "But it'd be inappropriate for two 60-something men to try to write bouncy little pop numbers. That doesn't mean we've become miserable, and it's not heavy industrial music either. I'd say the songs are sounding quite minimal, melodic and bass-driven."
Late last month, Almond and Ball shared some behind-the-scenes photos form inside their recording studio, alongside a caption that reads: "We have an album that stands up with the very best of Soft Cell and frankly, that's all we care about. An album made throughout the impossible circumstances of the last year, but almost the better for it."
