Smashing Pumpkins Begin Work on New Album

We're not quite sure what the status of Smashing Pumpkins' insanely ambitious Teargarden By Kaleidyscope is, but songwriter Billy Corgan has officially confirmed that the band have begun working on a new album.

Yesterday (March 25), the grunge survivor tweeted, "Excited to announce today's our 1st official day of writing for new SP album. Wish us luck!"

It's currently unclear whether this album will be part of Teargarden By Kaleidyscope , a 44-song project that was originally intended to be released as a string of EPs. Last year, the band opted to release Oceania, which was dubbed an "album within an album." But it's so far unclear how this new as-yet-untitled album is connected, if at all.

Corgan has previously hinted that a new record might be in the works. Last year, he told MTV Hive, "I'm starting to write new songs for the next Pumpkins album... I have a title for the next album but I won't tell. It's going to be a cruel record. Vengeance is mine."

We had favourable things to say about Oceania, but it remains to be seen whether Corgan and company can maintain that momentum for their next release.
