Sleater-Kinney fever has swept over us all, with the band's reunion LP No Cities to Love set to land early next year. Before giving up the goods in full on January 20 through Sub Pop, the beloved trio have unleashed a nervous slab of spiraling indie rock for the devoted called "Surface Envy."
Janet Weiss straight up mangles the kit, as always, using an on-the-beat pound to drive the number. Descending carnival melodies mix with violent stabs of distorted sound, while Corin Tucker takes leads vocals to deliver her patented wired-up vibrato. She later teams with Carrie Brownstein on a stick together-themed chorus ("We win, we lose / Only together do we break the rules").
