Edmonton punks Slates have already lined up a Steve Albini-produced new album, Taiga, but they've now announced plans to release a covers EP in advance of that full-length. SST will be out on January 7, with all proceeds going towards All Hands Volunteers.

As the title indicates, the EP features five songs from the SST Records catalogue. The artists who Slates cover here are Sonic Youth, Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Saccharine Trust and the Dicks. The EP will be available through iTunes, via Slates' website and through the New Damage Records.

The band were inspired to support All Hands Volunteers by their friends in Eternal Husbands', who have also recently supported the organization. The non-profit aims to provide hands-on assistance to communities in need.

Slates drummer Dallas Thompson said in a statement, "We wanted to find a way to support Matt [Leedy] and the work All Hands Volunteers is currently doing. It's a great initiative, in which selfless volunteers have been getting their hands dirty helping to rebuild communities."

Taiga will be out on February 25.
