Silla and Rise have shared details of their third album alongside a new single. The trio of Cynthia Pitsiulak, Charlotte Qamaniq and Rise Ashen will release Silarjuaq on October 29 through Balanced Records.
The 15-song Silarjuaq finds the trio continuing to deftly blend Inuit throat-singing with dancefloor-ready production, and follows their Juno-nominated 2019 album Galactic Gala. Joining Silla and Rise on their third full-length outing are Tanya Tagaq, Theland Kicknosway, Deirdre Dooley, Risten Anine and Annie Aningmiuq.
Silarjuaq's title is drawn from the Inuktitut word for "universe." As press materials explain, the album title's root, "Sila," can encompass "concepts of weather, the land, the spirit of the atmosphere, cunning and intelligence." The addition of affix "-juaq" signifies enormity, alluding to "the grander structure of the cosmos in which we find ourselves."
Alongside the album announcement, Silla and Rise have shared new single "Anirniq," complete with a video shot at storied Ottawa venue Mavericks. Capturing a crew of dancers in motion beneath the stage lights, it's a perfect look at how their musical mixology can make you move.
"Anirniq" is the Inuktitut word for breath, and Silla and Rise add of their latest, "Inhale and feel your lungs swell, hear the heartbeat in your ears, and exhale. The power and control you hear in katajjaq [throat singing] requires mastery of breath. Take time occasionally to be conscious of your breath. It is the source of your power while here in flesh and blood."
