Shoplifting

Body Stories

BY Liz WorthPublished Mar 1, 2006

Shoplifting are one of the most astonishing young bands out there today, and Body Stories is going to strengthen the fan base that is growing around this Seattle-based quartet. Having grown out of a local scene that witnessed the remnants of riot grrrl dwindle and the city’s identity fade as gentrification settled in, Shoplifting took inspiration in the apathy surrounding them. The results are explosive sounds rooted in DIY ethics and lo-fi ramblings. Stripped down and running solely on unabashed energy, the sounds that are coming out of Shoplifting can drown you out, pull you under, and spit you back out again. Compelling rhythms over layers of noise strike a chord with a style consistent with Seattle scenes but a feeling of something exciting and new breathes just under the surface of each fuzzy note. Shoplifting combine frayed spirals of noise with the issues that drive the band members, like gender issues, feminism, the current U.S. government and anarchist politics, as are noted on songs such as "Male Gynecology,” "What About a Word” and "Claude Glass.” Body Stories is a sonic assault that could turn Shoplifting into a success story.
