Sharon Jones Diagnosed with Cancer, Forced to Postpone New Album

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings were looking forward to a busy 2013 that was to include a new album and tour, but those plans have now been delayed indefinitely as Jones has been diagnosed with cancer.

A press release notes that this is stage-one bile duct cancer, which was discovered early and has not spread. The R&B singer is expected to fully recover, but she will need to have invasive surgery that will require an extended recovery.

Jones said in a statement, "Over the last few weeks I haven't felt good and I didn't know what was going on. We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays. We just found out that I have a stage-one tumour on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it's operable and curable! I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover. I'll be staying in touch and keeping my fans and friends updated on my progress. I'm looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!"

The new album Give the People What They Want had been scheduled to come out on August 6 through Daptone Records, but its release has now been postponed. Stay tuned for updates regarding a new release date and, until then, stream the album cut "Retreat!" below.
