Tony Jacome, singer-drummer of the Hamilton-based noise trio Shallow North Dakota, has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The cancer is inoperable, and a GoFundMe has been launched to help his family deal with expenses.
According to a writeup that accompanies the fundraiser, Jacome is 44 and the father to four children. The pancreatic cancer has spread to his liver and is inoperable, but he will be undergoing chemotherapy in the hopes of getting more time with his children and wife, Cheryl.
Jacome and his family recently moved into a new home, and his wife has been unable to work her regular job due to the pandemic. This means that bills will be mounting. As of press time, the fundraiser has raised $17,172 of its $25,000 goal.
Shallow North Dakota are a sludge/noise/hardcore trio who have been active since 1993 and were on the Exclaim! cover back in the '90s. They haven't released an album since 2004's Mob Wheel, but they remain active, and in late 2020 released a couple of archival live albums on Bandcamp.
The band posted about the sad news on Facebook, announcing that all Bandcamp proceeds would be going to Jacome's cancer fund. According to the post, "Easily one of the nicest loveable people I know and he makes every person he meets happy, laugh and smile. This is a terrible blow to him, his family and friends… Thank you and please reach out and talk to your loved ones and never take them for granted."
