Scott Stapp Opens Up About "Psychotic Break," Biopolar Diagnosis

Back in the fall, life took a sad turn for onetime Creed leader Scott Stapp, who claimed that he was "under some kind of pretty vicious attack" that had left him broke and homeless. Soon after, he sought almost half a million dollars in a crowdfunding campaign. Now, the alt-rock star has spoken out about his problems and revealed that he has bipolar disorder.

Speaking with People, Stapp said, "I had a psychotic break that was brought on by alcohol and drug abuse. I was hallucinating. I drove around the United States for a month, following an angel that I saw on the hood of my car."

He continued, "In my delusional thinking, I thought my family was involved in ISIS, and that millions of dollars had been taken from me to support terrorism. All of it was nonsense. I was out of my mind."

Eventually Stapp entered a treatment centre and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Since then, he's gotten sober, takes medication and meets with a sponsor as he works through a 12-step program.

Back in the fall, Stapp had denied being addicted to drugs and alcohol. He has had incidents stemming from intoxication and erratic behaviour that date back more than a decade, and he has even claimed to have considered suicide. Hopefully his diagnosis means those days are behind him.
