Scott Holt

Angels In Exile

BY Eric ThomPublished Dec 1, 2001

Scott Holt's third solo release continues his leanings away from his employer's definition of blues and closer to Hendrix's. Holt is an unapologetic closet rocker who has taken his Buddy Guy day job into new territory with more original material than his last outing but still seems to fall short of his true potential. Guests Bill Payne and Paul Barrere spice things up on the Little Feat classic "Spanish Moon" and assist Holt in building an epic version of Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell." Yet Holt's abilities should take him beyond that turf cut out by the likes of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang before him. He's got solid blues credentials that go bone deep, even if Angels In Exile finds him still searching for his voice, one day he's going to deliver the goods.
