As the Tupac murder trial progresses, Run-DMC vocalist Darryl "DMC" McDaniels has revealed that the trio were supposed to be in the car with the late rapper on the night he was murdered, and only avoided a possibly deadly situation thanks to their late DJ Jam Master Jay taking "hours" to get ready.
McDaniels said on the Drink Champs podcast this weekend that the group behind "Walk This Way" and "It's Tricky" were in Las Vegas because Tupac's label Death Row Records had hired them to perform at an after-party for the Mike Tyson fight that Tupac and Suge Knight had attended that night.
"So, we get a call, it's Suge ... 'Yo, me and Pac coming to get y'all. You're gonna ride to the fight with us.' Cause remember, who was in the [car] with them? Nobody was in the backseat. Me, Run and Jay was supposed to be in that backseat," he said. "The reason why we ain't ride to the fight with Pac is cause Jay was getting dressed. Jay would spend hours ... It would be a fashion show."
McDaniels said that Run-DMC planned to meet Knight and Tupac at the after-party along with MC Hammer, but were instead given a briefcase full of cash and told to go home without performing, and didn't find out until the next morning that Tupac had been shot.
A few months ago, also on Drink Champs, Warren G revealed that he had saved Snoop Dogg from being with Tupac that night by persuading him to watch the fight in L.A. instead, which in turn has led to Knight levelling accusations that Snoop was potentially involved in the murder.
The as-yet unsolved investigation finally gained some ground back in September, when Las Vegas police arrested Duane "Keefe D" Davis, who is set to stand trial next June.
