Following up their self-titled EP from 2010, Atlanta metal unit Royal Thunder are now delivering their debut full-length, CVI, which Relapse Records releases Tuesday (May 22). But right now you can stream the whole thing here at Exclaim.ca.
Described in a press release as a "sultry, southern, hard rock thinker of an album," Royal Thunder should appeal to fans of fellow Georgia metal units like Mastodon, Baroness and Kylesa. Opener "Parsonz Curse" sets the tone with its slow-motion mix of Sabbath doom-meets-Southern rock licks, with singer Mlny Parsonz bluesily belting out her lyrics with conviction.
Elsewhere, the band deliver a droning intro to the nine-minute epic "Shake and Shift," before erupting into a series of classic rock-minded guitar solos and breathy background vocals. And while the bulk of the record keeps things above the six-minute mark, "Minus" is a relatively shorter, tender, minor chord-driven acoustic number.
