Only With Laughter Can You Win

BY Michael BarclayPublished Sep 1, 2003

Thomas was that brainy, talented friend in high school with a choirgirl’s voice who edited the poetry yearbook and was the top drama student but never really let loose. Everybody liked her, especially your parents, and when you played her music for them they told you how they always knew she would go far. You’re glad she’s doing well, and you figure she’s probably married by now because how else could she write these lyrics: "You and me/ me and you/ there couldn’t be a better two/ to be blessed and know the meaning of true love.” Now she’s Sub Pop’s answer to Sarah McLachlan and she’s on her second album of nicey nice and sweetie sweet. Fortunately, there isn’t much cutey cute, but it’s still sugary enough to make you wince.
