Chris Friedrich, bassist for Massachusetts instrumental post rock outfit Caspian, passed away last weekend, according to a Facebook post from the band today (August 28).

While the details behind the death have not been revealed, the group confirmed in their message that the musician died unexpectedly this past Sunday (August 25). The act added that they're asking for privacy during this time.

"We have lost a close friend, a true brother, and a presence that can never be replaced in any of our lives," the group wrote. "Chris epitomized the heart and soul of Caspian, and in our own ways — both individually and collectively — dedicate ourselves to honoring his memory. We ask for privacy. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Caspian's upcoming August 31 performance at Manchester, NH's Engine Room was booked as a benefit for a friend of Friedrich's in need of a lung transplant, but the show will now also act as a tribute to the group's fallen bandmate.

Caspian's last studio LP with Friedrich was last year's Waking Season, which you can stream in full down below. Exclaim! had proclaimed the band's earlier Live at the Old South Church release a "a strong, moving album" that incorporates "just enough shoegaze and heaviness into their sound to attract the headbangers."
