Richard Underhill

Moment in Timer

BY Glen HallPublished Jun 1, 2006

This is an unapologetically "jazz” album, full of clear, articulate solos, supportive ensemble playing and just plain fun. No sombre, oh-so-serious posturing here. Underhill and cohorts communicate the infectious joy of players clearly enjoying the opportunity to play interesting music, all RU’s compositions. Crisp drumming by Daniel Barnes and Joe Poole and consistently strong bass lines by Mike Milligan and Graig Earle supply the gas to get pianist Luis Guerra’s and altoist Underhill’s creative engines firing on all cylinders. And while the music on the CD may not be breaking new musical ground, its unalloyed exuberance and heartfelt happiness make Moment in Time an invigorating listening treat.
