Richard O'Brien

Absolute O’Brien

BY Matt MernaghPublished Oct 1, 1999

Maybe all the potty humour I’ve been hearing lately has dulled my sense of humour. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t even force a laugh for the first release Richard O’Brien has had in 25 years. You may remember him as the Butler in the Rocky Horror Picture Show; he also composed the music, most notably, “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again.” For this album, he has used a lounge jazz sound that might appeal to your parents’ warped and dated sense of humour. Honestly though, the music isn’t funny, just bad. One would think “Incubus of Love” would appeal to my gothic humour, but it doesn’t. It was so badly over shadowed by the snazzy jazzy lounge sound. Maybe O’Brien’s past success was just one hit wonderment. Either way, he is no match for the Divine Comedy.
