"Sonic Bloom”

BY Cam LindsayPublished Oct 1, 2006

On their latest EP Wait, the now army-clad (so long robes!) Texan collective pay tribute to two great bands of the ‘90s. Their attempt at Nirvana’s "Lithium” embodies everything bad about covers, stripping the original’s gut-wrenching purpose and spinning it into a loopy flower power love-in. But leader Tim DeLaughter got it right with Tripping Daisy’s "Sonic Bloom” and he should — he wrote it nearly a decade ago. Stripping the fundamental flourishing sonic psych-outs and unfolding their communal harmonics, it’s a marvellous update that will hopefully send DeLaughter back into his underappreciated catalogue.
