Pitch Blacks sophomore disc features well-played guitar-driven music with blasts of organ adding fresh layers to the bands math rock equation. Containing ex-members of Screw 32 and Big Rig, Pitch Black solidly merges minor-key dissonance with energetic volume and rhythm shifts. While the groups sound commonly nods towards the powerful intricacies of the Hot Snakes and Drive Like Jehu, This Is the Modern Sound also includes songs that reflect the menace and muscularity of the Murder City Devils. Although the band wears its influences somewhat prominently, Pitch Black demonstrates solid talents at crafting varied rocknroll.
