While the "DJ mix" often brings to mind is the four-four stompings of a kick drum, producer/DJ Peter Van Hoesen might at first be expected to fit his own mixes into this preconception given his most recent original track "Axis Mundi," a mighty peak-night techno work designed for the massive Berlin power-plant-turned-club that is Berghain (the track was recently released on the club's Berghain 05 compilation). However, Van Hoesen's new SSG Special could not be more contrary to popular mix ideals.
The Belgian producer works his vast knowledge of droning experimental works here, putting together a mix that is almost entirely drum free. To call the mix "ambient" would be selling it short of its less ambient qualities; many tracks could more appropriately be described as classical. Either way, the mix is an intellectually tantalizing body of music and has much to be gained from its introspective feel.
